MERCEDES W113 PAGODA BRAKING PARTS
The Mercedes W113 Pagoda started its production in 1963 with the 230SL having solid brake disc rotors on the front axle, with a choice of two piston calipers by ATE or GIRLING and a three-piston configuration by BENDIX. Power-assisted drum brakes to the rear used ATE dual 19.05mm piston hydraulic brake cylinders to operate 65mm wide shoes.
The 1967 launch of the 250SL led to the upgrade of rear brakes from drums to discs, with the addition of a brake compensator valve tucked away under the boot floor to balance the front rear brakes.
Power to the brakes was assisted by a vacuum-operated booster, supplied by ATE with two separate circuits coming from the master cylinder for the front and rear axles independently.
The 250SL and 280SL’s hand-operated parking brake made use of the existing shoes in the 230SL, before gaining their own brake shoes which were operated by a system of three handbrake pull cables. The mechanical ratchet pull lever lived in the left front footwell on both LHD and RHD variations of the W113 Pagoda.
