EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR THE MERCEDES PAGODA W113 SL
There are three main variations of the exhaust system for the Mercedes Pagoda W113 SL, with all changes focused on the combination of manifolds and link pipes. Left-hand drive models saw a changeover during the production of the 230SL model when, at chassis number 013864, curvaceous manifolds that dropped down to meet the exhaust were replaced with ‘swan neck’ link pipes chasing shorter more angular manifolds.
Right-Hand Drive variants saw only one form of exhaust structure. Mounted on the side of the engine bay, the manifold transports fumes forwards with the turn-back link pipes taking over from there to circumnavigate the steering assembly, sending the fumes our through the exit tips.
All models of the Mercedes SL used the same middle silencer, link pipes and back box throughout production from 1963 through 1971. Although the installation of these requires welding for both genuine Mercedes-Benz parts and most aftermarket replacement silencers.
Suspended from the cabin floor using a complex fitting kit of brackets, gaskets and rubber hangers, the Mercedes Pagoda W113 SL’s exhaust exits the car on the right side via a pair of slip-on chrome exhaust tips.
