FRONT AXLE MERCEDES-BENZ SL W113 PAGODA
The front axle of a Mercedes-Benz SL W113 Pagoda uses a double-wishbone suspension setup with a king pin and trunnions at the steering knuckle. Bilstein shock absorbers have remained in use until now, remaining the prominent supplier to Mercedes-Benz in both standard and race applications. Drop link anti-roll bar keeps body roll in check via the front lower control arms, while the recirculating ball steering points you at the road ahead. Optional hydraulic power-assisted steering was almost always ticked when ordered from new.
The front subframe bolts to the body via two main subframe bushes that sit directly above the coil springs; with stability being offered by two small leaf springs at the front as well as a Panhard rod running alongside the steering damper.
When reassembling the SL W113 Pagoda, configuring the ride height of an SL is somewhat of an art form. A technician will use experience and feel to select bushes and shims by dimension, before being able to verify the results only when the car is fully assembled and on the ground. Trial and error are common and for a total restoration, one can expect to spend up to two days just perfecting the way the car sits.
